The beginning of a story
Born in an almost forgotten era in 1902, our great-grandmother Marietta, lived her early childhood in Alexandria of Egypt, daughter of immigrants from Santorini. There is where she and our great-grandfather Alexandros met, fell in love, and married. After their son Evangelos was born, Alexandros being not only a merchant but a diplomat of Italy as well, moved his family to Ethiopia where he was appointed ambassador.
The return to the homeland
When Italy invaded Ethiopia in October 1935, the family was forced to flee the country, finally settling in Santorini, calling home this very mansion that belonged to Marietta’s family for more than 100 years already. The Italian invasion of Greece in 1940, followed by the German forces shortly after, found the family well established in Santorini, and forced them to endure the devastation of war, this time not being able to escape. Their mansion was fortunately not occupied by the invading troops, leaving the family relatively unharmed, trying to steer their lives through poverty and destruction.
New start
Liberation in 1944, allowed the family to start over and create a secure, loving environment for their children and grandchildren to grow into. The Italian influence our great-grandfather Alexandros brought to this household, is still embraced by our modern era family, and has become the ambience we are proud to welcome our guests in.
